This Detour Gets Weird Fast
There’s a place in Alberta where the prairie suddenly drops away and the landscape goes completely weird in the best possible way.
It’s easy to do in a weekend, ridiculously photogenic, and way more fun than another “maybe we’ll just stay home” Saturday.
🧭 This Week’s Detour

Drumheller Hoodoos
Drumheller, Alberta
📍 About 1 1/2 hour drive from Calgary or 3 hours form Edmonton
This week’s detour is Drumheller — Alberta’s badlands classic. It’s close enough for a simple weekend escape, but the scenery feels like you drove into another world.
The first thing that hits you is the land.
One minute you’re doing a normal drive through the prairie, and the next the road drops into a valley of layered cliffs, coulees, and strange rock formations that look more like a movie set than a weekend trip.
Add in dinosaurs, canyon rims, and wide-open skies, and Drumheller feels like a detour that punches way above its distance from home.
🍁Why This Detour Is Worth It
Drumheller!
It’s worth it because the landscape is totally different from almost anywhere else in Alberta — big views, badlands scenery, and iconic stops all packed into one trip.
It’s unique because you get both dramatic natural scenery and world-famous dinosaur history, with the Royal Tyrrell Museum as the anchor experience.
It’s easy because most of the big stops are simple pull-ins, short walks, or quick scenic drives, so you can do a lot without turning the weekend into a logistics project.
👇 Hidden Gems
hidden stop: the 11 Bridges to Wayne, AB — a short stretch with 11 one-lane bridges and a lot of character
great view: Horsethief Canyon for that stand-on-the-edge-and-stare moment
unique experience: climbing 106 stairs inside the World’s Largest Dinosaur to look out from its mouth over the valley
📍 If You Go
Distance / location: Drumheller is about 150 from Calgary and 280 km from Edmonton.
Best time to visit: Spring through fall is the easiest for exploring viewpoints and scenic stops, but Drumheller’s tourism site also highlights winter visits if you want fewer crowds and a different look at the badlands.
Simple logistics: Plan around the Royal Tyrrell Museum if it’s on your list. From May 15 to August 31, (7 days a week), 9 AM - 9 PM (no entry after 8 PM) And September 1 to May 14, (Tuesday to Sunday), 10 AM - 5 PM (no entry after 4 PM), and closed Mondays except holiday Mondays.
🚗 What To Do (Skip the Overplanning)

Welcome to Drumheller
1️⃣ Day 1: Start with the dinosaurs
Begin at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, then head over to the World’s Largest Dinosaur and climb the 106 steps for a fun view over Drumheller. It’s an easy way to get both the world-famous fossil side and the playful roadside side of the town right away.
2️⃣ Day 1: Take in the badlands
Later, make your way to Horsethief Canyon for the big scenery payoff. The views are dramatic, the stop is easy, and it’s one of those places that makes Drumheller feel completely different from the drive in.
3️⃣ Day 2: Slow it down in Wayne
On day two, take the 11 Bridges drive to the historic town of Wayne. It’s only about 15 minutes from Drumheller, so it’s an easy side trip, but it feels like stepping into a tiny badlands outpost with old coal-town roots, quirky charm, and a historic saloon that makes the stop feel like part of the adventure, not just a scenic add-on.
☕ Worth a Stop

Star Mine Suspension Bridge
Cafe Ole for a cozy coffee stop, waffles, paninis, and baked goods.
Heller Good Sandwiches for a legit lunch stop with locally sourced ingredients and a menu that changes monthly.
If you want one more quick side stop, check out the Star Mine Suspension Bridge near Rosedale — a historic swinging bridge with great river views and a little extra badlands character.
Detour Crew Tip:
Don’t cram every dinosaur stop into one day. Do the museum, one great view, one fun roadside stop, and leave a little room to just look around.
